Bullying // My Experience

Hey guys!
This week is anti-bullying week, so I've decided that my blog this week will talk a little bit about my various experiences with bullying - even though talking about it really pushes me way out of my comfort zone, and obviously makes me upset, but it's something that needs to be spoken about - and a couple of ways I tried to cope with it - obviously, the things I did will not work for everyone, but hopefully it will help you if you or someone you know is being bullied, and if it helps even one person, it's more than worth it.
As I've mentioned before in blog posts, I got bullied a lot in my life, both at primary school and secondary school. Sure, I was lucky enough to still have a few people on my side both times, which was a massive lifeline for me, but sadly, when I was at secondary school, most of my friends didn't go to my school, so I only really got to see them at weekends, even though I could obviously text them and chat to them online during the week. I also had a lot of support from my parents and family, especially in secondary school, so I had a good positive support network around me, even though a lot of the time I felt really lost and alone, like I had no one to talk to. I also blamed myself a lot, which looking back, was probably a really stupid thing to do, but at the time I genuinely believed that a lot of it was my fault.
When I was a child, I had one person in my class who did most of the bullying, then a lot of people who just sided with that one person. I also had an amazing best friend who helped me though a lot of it, but sadly she moved away when I was about 7 or 8, leaving me to struggle through another 3 years. I kind of made friends with a few other people during that time, luckily, but I still felt really alone. However, one thing I will say is that, in both instances of being bullied, once I told a teacher about it, things got so much worse - neither school I attended seemed to have any idea whatsoever about how to deal with bullying (especially the secondary school I was at, that was a truly horrific experience) but I would still recommend that you tell someone, as in the long run it will help - I was at school a while ago now, haha, so I'm sure their methods of dealing with bullying will have changed since I was there. The method my primary school teacher came up with was to stand me in front of my whole class - as a shy child, you can imagine I was thrilled with this, haha - and explain to them all that I was being bullied, and how it was making me feel - thankfully, she didn't make me name the culprit, but I'm pretty sure everyone knew who I was talking about anyway. Luckily, after that it seemed to pretty much stop, and I managed to make a few friends, so primary school actually ended on a high for me instead of a low.
Secondary school was initially fun for me, and remained that way up until year nine, when I turned 14. When I first started secondary school, I was still really shy and quiet, but luckily I made a good group of friends in my first year who really helped me come out of my shell, both in and out of school. During this time, I got into a lot of bands who I still love to this day - mainly AFI and Green Day - and started going out most weekends, dying my hair and generally being really happy and confident. However, towards the end of year 9, some of my best friends and I ended up falling out, and after that, school was unbearable for me as, sadly, it was my school friends I fell out with - even more unluckily for me, we all shared a group of friends, so I saw them at weekends too - luckily, though, the friendship group was pretty divided, so we didn't see each other as much as we could have.
A lot of things were said throughout this time - a lot of it online, said anonymously on various websites that have come under fire in the past for promoting anonymous bullying (in my case, formspring) and some also said by me- and a lot of things were done - this time, mainly to me, and not always at school (one thing that sticks out the most is walking past the group on my way to meet my friends, and being slammed up against a building and threatened) - till it got to the point where I was having really bad panic attacks every morning, and refused to go into school - in fact, at one stage I was getting dressed in my uniform and pretending to go to school, then just getting a bus into town and hanging round the shops and internet cafes until it was time to go home again (I probably would have got away with this for a lot longer if my head of year hadn't called home asking why I was never in school...oops)
My parents got called in for meetings, and so did I. In one meeting, they put me in a room with the people who were bullying me and they thought that would help sort it...in fact, it made it worse (which I always knew it would.) In another instance, they said they were referring me for counselling, which baffled me, and then when I arrived the counsellor proceeded to list off what was supposedly wrong with me, instead of asking me why I thought I was there, and then they wondered why I sat there angrily ignoring what they had to say for the rest of the session - maybe because I didn't appreciate being told it was my fault I was being bullied because I was "a loner who didn't try to fit in and make friends, and who has a history of self harm". (Just to clarify, none of the above was true. I had some other people at school who I hung out with instead, and I didn't self harm, so I have no idea where any of that "information" about me came from)
So, in the end, after a lot of meetings that went nowhere, panic attacks and a LOT of stress that could have been avoided, I ended up dropping out of school, only going back in to sit my GCSE exams.
So, some of the main points I want to make are -
1. Tell someone if you're being bullied. Not every school will be as useless as mine were, and when I told my parents, I thought they'd be annoyed at me, but luckily they were really understanding and supportive, and were there with me every step of the way. There are also a lot of organisations you can call if you'd prefer, such as Childline.
2. If you're being bullied online or via text, make sure you keep a record of what's happening - take a lot of screenshots, etc - and never respond. If you ignore it, hopefully they'll get bored if there's no retaliation, and will stop. If it gets really bad, however, go to someone you trust, or even the police, and take all your evidence with you. Also, try and avoid sites where you can ask things anonymously , or if you do join up to one, disable the option for people to ask things anonymously.
3. It didn't help me, personally, but counselling or speaking to someone may help you. For me, what worked best was writing down how I was feeling, and speaking to my parents about it. Bottling everything up inside is dangerous.
So, there you have it. If you, or anyone you know, are getting bullied, speak out now, before it gets worse. I know it's scary, and I know you may feel like a tattletale, but it's better to get it out in the open than to keep it bottled up inside, and feeling like it's all your fault.
I really hope this helps! Also, please feel free to message me if you feel like you'd like to talk to someone who's been through it all - I know what it's like to feel alone and like you have no one to turn to. (sunsetsanddragonflies@gmail.com)

The Sweater Weather Tag!

Hey guys!
I'm sorry I've been neglecting this blog so much recently - in all honesty, I've had really bad writer's block recently, and haven't even been thinking of that many ideas for my blog over at Birds, let alone for this one! There's been a few things that happened recently that I'll porbbaly be blogging about soon, and maybe another tag or two, but for now, this is the Sweater Weather tag, as we're well and truly into autumn now and I love it!
Sorry again, but I hope you enjoy!

1. Favorite candle scent?
At the moment, I'm loving the Fireside Treats candle from Yankee Candle, and the Black Raspberry and Vanilla one from Flamingo Candles. I need more seasonal candles though, I'm running out!

2. Coffee, tea, or hot chocolate?
Most of the time, I'd definitely go for tea, but at this time of year I really like hot chocolate, especially peppermint hot chocolate <3 I also really liked the salted caramel hot chocolate from Starbucks last year, it was so good (in small doses though, it's so sickly if you have larger than a small!)

3. What's the best fall memory you have?
I like everything about it, but the thing that really sticks out for me is the massive bonfire that my dad does at his every year, when we have dinner and fireworks, and bake potatoes/roast marshmallows in the ashes of the bonfire afterwards <3

4. Which makeup trend do you prefer: dark lips or winged eyeliner?
I personally hate having anything on my lips, so I'm going to go for winged eyeliner, although I do that all year round and not just in fall!

5. Best fragrance for fall?
I have to admit, I'm not the best person for having lots of different fragrances, but the thing I use the most around this time of year is the vanilla body spray from Boots - I know it's not perfume, but it smells so good and I love keeping a bottle in my bag so if I feel sad, I can just spritz myself with vanilla! (it's definitely one of my happy smells)

6. Favorite Thanksgiving food?
We don't celebrate Thanksgiving here in the UK, so I'm going to have to pass this one!

7. What is autumn weather like where you live?
Grey, cold and drizzly, mainly, but sometimes when it's crisp and dry it's really nice to go out for a walk.

8. Most worn sweater?
This year, it's probably the oversized navy one I bought at Matalan a while back - it's so snuggly and cozy! So I'd say either that, or my oversized cream one which I just knock around the house in.

9. Must-have nail polish this fall?
I recently got a really pretty shade in my Birchbox - A Grape Affair! by OPI - which is a really beautiful dark purple, and I'm really excited to try that out because I love OPI polishes, and I've wanted a nice deep purple for a while!

10. Football games or jumping in leaf piles?
I'm not sporty or athletic in the least, so I'm going to say jumping in leaf piles because it brings back a lot of cute childhood memories for me <3

11. Skinny jeans or leggings?
Always leggings. I don't think I've worn jeans in years...literally years...

12. Combat boots or Uggs?
Combat boots, definitely! I personally don't really like the look of Ugg boots that much.

13. Is pumpkin spice worth the hype?
I've never actually tried anything pumpkin spice - yet - so I can't really answer this, but it sounds like it might be pretty nice so we shall see!

14. Favorite fall TV show?
I don't really have one, to be honest! I watch TV shows year round and there's not really any that I associate with any time of the year.

15. What song really gets you into the fall spirit?
Umm, there's probably more, but off the top of my head either Sweater Weather - The Neighbourhood (rather apt, considering the name of this tag!) or Fallen Leaves - Billy Talent

My French Adventure!

Hey guys!
Sorry I've not blogged in ages - I wasn't at home for the first half of September, and I've also had really bad writer's block as well, but I should be back now!
I also want to mention in advance that there will be a lot of photos included in this post, and all of them are taken by myself.

As you may already know, part of the time I was away was when I went to stay at my aunt's house in France for 5 days - I hadn't been abroad in around eight or nine years, so I was massively excited to have some time away!
I was staying with family for a while before and after the holiday, which was lovely - I hadn't seen them in ages, so it was nice to catch up with them and chill for a few days! I barely slept the night before our flight, though, I was too excited and I just couldn't sleep anyway, haha!
Me and my aunt flew out from Stanstead early on Thursday morning – I do believe our flight was at around 7.15am – and I was excited yet nervous, as I hadn’t been abroad for around 8 or 9 years and I knew that I used to feel really sick when flying. However, all my worrying was for nothing, as I was fine for the whole flight, and even managed to eat something and flick through the Ryanair magazine without feeling nauseous! When we landed, it was blazing sunshine and so hot, worlds away from the mist and coldness in the UK that morning! We sorted out our hire car, and we were off – first stop was to have lunch with some friends of my aunt’s, who she’s known for years, and who I’d met years before, and it was a lovely afternoon. My aunt also had to sort out some things about her house, so we spent that afternoon and the next morning trying to sort things out so we could enjoy the rest of the holiday. I didn’t go with them the first afternoon, however, as the lack of sleep from the previous night and the heat made me sleepy, so I ended up falling asleep, oops. After we left their house, we popped to the supermarket to get some essentials, then headed back to the house and pretty much just had a lazy night in, and an early night, as we were shattered after not sleeping the night before and the heat and everything.
The next day, as I briefly mentioned above, was spent trying to sort out some things. After everything was pretty much sorted - which wasn't until mid afternoon, but once everything was sorted we took a walk around the small village where my aunt’s house is (which is where we were staying) and I took some photos, then we headed to a pretty stream which is about a ten minute walk down a pretty tree-lined path, and where me and my brother used to go paddling and catching small fish when we were younger and used to holiday there every summer. There was a shaded picnic table there, so we sat with an ice cream each and let everyone back home know that we were okay - it was, surprisingly, one of the few places in and around the village where we could get signal (the main place for me being on the church steps, haha). Eventually, we took a slow stroll back – as we needed to go back to the village shop to get a few things, and the shops close at 7pm there – and decided to watch a film, so we watched The Notebook - up until then I hadn't seen it, but everyone I knew who had seen it raved about it. It was a beautiful film, but it was sadder than I was expecting it to be! We also decided to make up most of our picnic that night, as we were heading to the beach the next day and didn't want to spend loads of money going to a cafe or restaurant there!
Saturday was beach day, so we packed up the car with everything we needed the night before, and set off bright and early in the morning so we could spend the day. We popped to the shops there first, as my aunt needed flip flops and we both needed sun cream, then settled fairly near to the water’s edge, and unpacked everything (we had so much stuff – a blanket, body board, tent, umbrella and even more, haha) I am ridiculously pale, so I was hoping I'd manage to catch the sun a bit and get a hint of a tan at least...unfortunately, although I did catch the sun, I ended up catching it a bit too much, and burnt my back - oops. I went in the sea for a while – which was beautifully clear, so you could see the fish swimming around your legs and everything – but sadly, the waves weren’t big enough to go body boarding, which is what I really wanted to do. Once we'd had enough of the beach, we went back to the shops quickly, and I picked up a really cool lighter (I don’t smoke, but I light a lot of candles in my room, so I’m forever running out of lighters) and some postcards - one for my mum and one for my dad - before we decided to sit at a cafe on the seafront, sipping lemonade and watching the world go by. We also noticed that there are loads of dogs in France, we saw so many different breeds! We decided to stop off at McDonald's on the way home so we could use their free wifi and check in with people, which was nice. When we eventually got home, we decided to watch another film, so we watched 8 Mile - which was better than I was expecting it to be - before we got another early night, as we were both exhausted from the past few busy days.
For Sunday's adventure, we set off bright and early to go to the castle in Carcassonne - there’s loads of cool little shops and cafes within, which is really nice! I bought some postcards and a metal sign from a really cool little stop which sold loads of vintage inspired stuff – I could have stayed there all day and spent all of my money, haha, it was amazing! We also found a really nice restaurant to get some lunch at, and ended up getting a three course lunch! I had goats cheese salad, duck and chips, then chocolate mousse for dessert, and my aunt had sausage salad, duck and chips too, and she chose creme brulee for dessert. We spent some time wandering around and looking at the architecture as well - it's such a gorgeous castle. When we got home, I fell asleep again (all the early starts and the heat were making me really tired) and my aunt decided to go outside to soak up some more sunshine and read her book, as she really wanted to tan some more. Eventually, once I woke up again - rather reluctantly - we watched The Help (definitely a book I want to read soon!) and I started reading The Book Thief, as I’ve wanted to read it for ages but hadn’t got round to it yet.
Monday - our last full day, sad face - was reserved as a shopping day, so we hit all the various big retail shops. I won’t list everything I bought, as I don’t want to bore you all, but I got some stationery (of course) a Skelanimals bag and a thin studded jumper, which will be perfect both in the summer or layered up in the winter. The weather wasn’t as good that day – in fact, when we were at a supermarket complex thing after grabbing some lunch (I had paella, it was amazing but not quite as seafood filled as I’m used to back home) it started pouring with rain (to the extent the roof started leaking, eek) and there was loads of thunder and lightning. Luckily, by the time we left, it had stopped, and was getting sunny and bright again. We also popped back to McDonald's - there's quite a few of them around, haha - to check emails and stuff again. The film we decided to watch on Monday was 50 First Dates – which I really didn’t enjoy, for whatever reasons – before packing as much as we could before the next day, as it was our last night in France, hence why we packed so much into the days we were there.
Tuesday was the day we were coming back - boo - so once we’d dropped off some presents for my aunt’s friends and done a few last minute things that we needed to do, we took the hire car back to the place near the airport and waited around for our flight home – which, sadly, was rather packed in the end, even though we were told it was going to be a pretty empty flight. I was a bit worried about flying back, as on the way I’d taken some travel sickness tablets before the flight and I didn’t have any with me, but I was fine the whole way back, so fingers crossed that I’ve outgrown getting travel sick! It was bittersweet landing back in the UK - it was nice coming home and seeing everyone again, but I also really missed being in France, as it was lovely getting away from everything and being able to relax with no responsibilities! I really hope I can go back soon.

TAG // THE BRITISH TAG

Hey guys!
This is probably one of my favourite tags so far, as it mentions tea! (I love tea. A lot.)
As you can most likely tell, I did kind of panic on a few (okay, most) of the questions, but it was fun to do and it's all good anyway!
I tag all of you, enjoy!

1 - HOW MANY CUPS OF TEA DO YOU HAVE A DAY? HOW DO YOU TAKE IT?
I usually have between 2 and 5 cups of tea a day, and I like it milky with one sugar

2 - FAVOURITE PART OF YOUR ROAST?
Mmmm, probably either the meat or yorkshire pubbings!

3 - FAVOURITE DUNKING BISCUIT?
Oh God, ummm, probably rich tea or custard creams!

4  - FAVOURITE QUINTESSENTIALLY BRITISH PAST TIME?
I literally have no idea apart from my unhealthy obsession with tea...

5 - FAVOURITE WORD?
BLIMEY!

6 - DO YOU KNOW ANY COCKNEY RHYMING SLANG?
Not very much, but enough!

7 - FAVOURITE SWEET?

TAG // SUMMERTIME

Hey guys!
I'm hoping to have a few blogs written and uploaded in the next week - I've actually had a few plans and not been an antisocial hermit for once, shock horror! - so I decided to just add in this tag while I'm working on the other blogs (I love a good tag once in a while!)
This one caught my eye, and because it's summer I decided there was no better time to post it than now! I tag all of you :D

1) What books are on your summer reading list?
I recently read Paper Towns by John Green, which was on my summer reading list (it was amazing). Some of the books that are still left on my summer reading list are -
The Runaway Princess by Hester Browne
Don't Tell The Groom by Anna Bell
You Don't Have To Say You Love Me by Sarra Manning
Ice Cream At Carrington's by Alexandra Brown
The Mortal Instruments series by Cassandra Clare

2) What's your favourite summer song at the moment?
At the moment I'm loving I Will Never Let You Down by Rita Ora, Somebody To You by The Vamps, She Looks So Perfect by 5SOS and Still Into You by Paramore

3) What book/song/movie/TV show reminds you of past summers?
All the cheesy summer one hit wonders usually remind me of summer! Pretty Things by Sarra Manning always reminds me of summer too, as it's a perfect summer read (to be fair, it's just a perfect book) and there's not really any shows or films that specifically remind me of summer!

4) What's your favourite summer clothing thing?
Definitely sunglasses! For me, the bigger the better!

5) What's your favourite thing about summer?
Being able to wear sunglasses! I also like going to the beach and not nearly getting frostbite when I go paddling, and who could forget barbeques?

6) What are you most looking forward to this summer?
Hopefully a bit of beach time and lots and lots of barbeques! Also hopefully catching up with my friends and doing fun, cheap outdoor things like going for picnics or just chilling outside somewhere nice!

7) Favourite place to go in summer?
As mentioned above, I have a massive soft spot for the beach, so I'd ideally love to go somewhere with a beach for a while.

Flamingo Candles!

Hey guys!

Before I start, just a disclaimer - I am in no way affiliated with, or sponsored by, Flamingo Candles. I was not asked to write this blog post, I just really liked the candles, so decided to make a blog post about them. I am not getting paid to write about these candles or mention this brand.

Last week, I was idly scrolling through my instagram feed - as I do multiple times a day when I get bored - and I stumbled across a competition being held by Flamingo Candles, a company my friend had recommended to me but I hadn't got round to ordering anything myself - I am a massive scented candle junkie, so I am always looking out for new brands and stuff to try! You basically had to repost the picture they'd posted with a hashtag to be in with the chance of winning 4 candles, so I thought "why not" and did it, then promptly forgot about it.
Last Friday, I was sitting on the sofa with my mum channel flicking, and a notification from instagram popped up, so I checked it and saw it was from Flamingo Candles, so I went on there and saw they'd tagged me in a post saying "congratulations!" and telling me I'd won! I got really excited - my mum was like "umm, are you okay?" and I was like "I WON!!" and she got so confused until I explained it, haha xD
So, I've been waiting impatiently since I emailed them my address (I hate waiting for things, I'm so impatient!) and they arrived yesterday! I couldn't wait to open them and smell them, they all sounded so amazing - they are Green Tea and Lemon, Candy Floss, Black Raspberry and Vanilla, and Orange Mandarin and Basil.

The first one I smelt was the Black Raspberry and Vanilla one - it's quite sweet but with a hint of sharpness, and has a lovely smooth vanilla undertone, which makes it not too sugary sweet and overwhelming. I am also a little bit in love with the glittery pink flamingo on the front - so cute!

The next one I smelt was the Green Tea and Lemon one - the lemon was less prominent than I was expecting, but it's sharp and delicious smelling, and the green tea makes it smell fresh and clean. This is more of a unisex scent, so would be a great present for a male as well as female :D

Next up was the Candy Floss one - the smell reminds me a bit of a fruity milkshake, only sweeter and more sugary. It smells more like a lolly than candy floss, in my opinion, but it's a lovely sweet scent which will appeal to people with a sweet tooth ;) it's so pink and girly, the pastel flamingo is a lovely touch too!

Finally, I tried the Orange Mandarin and Basil one - it's sharp and citrussy, with a lovely hint of warm herby basil so it's not too overwhelmingly sweet. I think this is definitely one I would repurchase in the future, as it works well for both summer and winter, and it smells amazing! I also love the contrast between the orange flamingo and yellow candle.

I decided to try the Black Raspberry and Vanilla one - which is burning as I write this - and now I'm really excited to try them all out! They also smell extremely potent, even without them being lit, so the smell fills the whole room!
So, all in all, I am really happy with them all - they smell amazing, the packaging is amazing (the white flamingos engraved into the lid make them even prettier!) and they're a reasonable size, so will last for a while, even if I burn them a lot! I would highly recommend them to any scented candle junkies :)
Thanks again, Flamingo Candles - I will definitely be purchasing some different scents when these run out!

If you'd like to purchase some for yourself, head on over to www.flamingocandles.co.uk <3

Summer Evenings!

Hey guys!

How are you all enjoying the sunny, sweltering weather we've been having recently? Personally, I've been struggling slightly - I'm not a massive fan of the heat, give me autumn any day - but it's nice having it stay light for longer in the evenings.

Over the weekend, me and my best friend were incredibly bored to the point of tears, so we decided on a whim to meet up at Waterloo and just hang out for a while at Southbank -  by the time we decided what we were doing, it was getting fairly late, so we decided to meet at around 6ish (as at the time, I was still in my pjs and needed time to charge my phone, wash my hair, etc, and she needed to charge her phone and stuff too)

When I arrived at Waterloo, Lisa texted me to say she had miscalculated the timings of her trains and stuff, so she would be later than she thought, so I took the time to go and freshen up before heading to Starbucks to get a cool lime refresher (literally addicted to those in the summer, along with the new banana yogurt frappuccinos!) before heading back to the designated meeting point. Before long, she arrived, so we headed out to Southbank to get some food, as neither of us had eaten much that day and we were starving! Once we had food, we strolled back towards the London Eye, and found a patch of grass to sit on - it was really close to the eye, but not so close that we were surrounded by people, so it was lovely.

Once we'd eaten, we just sat there for a while, catching up and even just sitting in silence for a while (not awkward silence, luckily, we never have those which I'm forever grateful for) and people watching, before taking about a million selfies (and deleting most of them again) and chatting again. I kind of got a bit carried away with telling her something, which I probably could have explained more concisely, but she listened to the whole thing and didn't judge me, which was lovely. It's funny, we saw each other on Thursday too for a gig (which I may or may not blog about too) and we chat every day via text, but we still had masses to chat about, which to me is one of the signs of an amazing friendship <3

We decided at around 9pm, when it was just beginning to get dark, that we would go back to Starbucks, as we were really thirsty, so we strolled back to Waterloo (as that's where the nearest Starbucks is). On the way there, something happened that made us laugh so much - we were just walking and chatting and Lisa sneezed, and I was about to say "bless you" but some random tourist man beat me to it, and for some reason it just made us laugh and we couldn't stop laughing for ages!
and got refreshers - I got the cool lime one, as I'm a little bit addicted, and Lisa got the Valencia orange one, which is also delicious - and a banana yogurt frappuccino to share before checking what time the last trains home were at and heading back to Southbank.
When we got back, we lay down on the grass and looked up at the sky and the London Eye for a while - it wasn't dark enough to see stars - plus London has light pollution and stuff, so it makes it harder to see stars anyway - but it was still really nice and relaxing to just lie there and not have to fill the silence with mindless chatter. At one point, the lights on the London Eye were flashing to different colours, but Lisa didn't believe me when I told her, haha, and told me I was imagining things - typically, it didn't do it again after that, as is always the way!
Unfortunately, we had to head back and get last trains and everything, so we didn't get to stay for much longer, but it was an amazing impromptu trip and it was lovely to see Lisa again, as we don't have any plans together for a while now and it makes me sad!
Are you making the most of the long, light summer evenings now too?
